Good jumping technique begins long before take-off – namely with a controlled and balanced approach. Many mistakes, such as imprecise distances or uneven jumping, already arise during the approach. Pole work can help improve rhythm, activate the hindquarters, and optimize the take-off point.

Why Pole Work is Important for the Jumping Approach

Pole work promotes evenness, suppleness, and precision of aids. It helps rider and horse find the canter rhythm and trains the eye for distances. It also improves the horse's balance, allowing it to take off more powerfully.

Through targeted exercises with poles, you can:
✔ improve canter quality
✔ develop a consistent basic tempo
✔ activate the hindquarters
✔ specifically prepare the take-off point

Exercises to Improve the Approach to the Jump

1. Canter Poles for Rhythm

Place 3 to 5 canter poles at even intervals (approx. 3 - 3.20 m depending on the horse) on a straight line. This teaches the horse to maintain an even canter, activate its hindquarters, and balance itself.

Variation: Perform the same exercise with slightly raised poles to increase the horse's attention.

2. Pole Before the Jump – for a Better Take-off Point

Place a single pole approx. 2.50 - 3 meters in front of a vertical or oxer. The pole helps the horse find the correct take-off point and jump more evenly.

Tip: Vary the distance to the pole slightly to prepare the horse for different jump distances.

3. Combination of Poles and Jumps – for Better Line Riding

Place a series of poles in front of a jump in a slightly curved line or at a slight angle. This exercise promotes control and helps develop the ideal approach to the jump.

4. Canter Poles on the Turn – for More Control in the Approach Phase

To better guide the horse to the jump even on turns, you can set up canter poles on a turn. This helps prevent turning too tightly or too wide and prepares the horse for take-off.

Tip: Work with cones or markers to train precise line riding.

Conclusion

With targeted pole work, you can optimally prepare your horse for jumping. The correct approach ensures more safety, better take-off points, and a more harmonious jumping technique. Incorporate these exercises regularly into your training and watch your horse improve!

Good luck and have fun with your jumping training!
